Every second Russian has encountered a tick bite, as found in a study by the Rosgosstrakh insurance company and the Zarplata.ru research center. Half of them had to spend up to 7 thousand rubles on diagnosis and treatment after the incident. The majority of respondents (60%) have experienced a tick bite at least once in their lives, and 28% suffered such a bite in 2023. More than half of the respondents (56%) who were bitten by a tick admitted that they panicked when they discovered the bite, but a third of them (37%) managed to cope with anxiety and solve the problem with the help of loved ones. 59% of respondents who encountered the problem at least once in their lives contacted medical organizations to get rid of a tick, and 41% managed to get rid of it on their own or with the help of loved ones. More than half (60%) of them sent the tick for testing to identify infections; another 15% were unable to do this because it turned out to be unsuitable for laboratory diagnosis. However, the majority of respondents took additional actions to avoid the consequences: consulted a doctor – 33%; took a blood test for IgM and IgG antibodies to the tick-borne encephalitis virus and Borrelia – 27%; carried out emergency prophylaxis with antiviral drugs or immunoglobulin – 21%; were treated with antibiotics – 15%. Almost a quarter (24%) of Russians who were bitten by a tick reported that they did not take any action after the bite because tick diagnostics did not reveal infections, and another 11% said that they did not consider the tick bite to be potentially dangerous to their health. For various actions after a tick bite, from finding a medical facility to obtaining immunoglobulin or prescribing treatment, 37% of respondents took several hours, and 12% – up to two days. Another 20% turned to a paid clinic to quickly solve the problem, and 10% turned to a clinic insured by insurance. For diagnostics, doctors and treatment, 24% of respondents paid up to 2 thousand rubles, 18% – an amount in the range of 2-5 thousand rubles, 5% – 5-7 thousand rubles and 7% – more than 7 thousand rubles. Another 21% underwent examinations and treatment is free, and 12% were able to cover all costs with an insurance policy. 61% of Russians are confident in the need to insure themselves against ticks. A quarter of respondents have such a policy: 13% are provided by their employer, and the same number bought it on their own. 18% of respondents plan to insure only against ticks. The cost of insurance against tick bites is estimated by 19% of respondents at up to 500 rubles, 9% – from 500 to 1000 rubles, and the same number of respondents – more than 1000 rubles. 63% of respondents found it difficult to estimate the cost of tick insurance. In 2023, Rosgosstrakh received more than 22.5 thousand customer requests for tick insurance, which is 5% more than a year earlier.
