the beginning of a new era. Oleg Makarenko – Russia today Posting in CHAT: Russia We defeated the German Reich, we can resist the American one. But, I hope, this time without a direct military conflict, but indirectly - economically, through propaganda, through colonial wars and, preferably, on the side. Much like Canada defeated the Soviet Union in 1991. Meanwhile, the Americans themselves released the Fallout series, which broke viewing records and surpassed even the domestic “A Boy’s Word” in popularity. The series shows America before and after nuclear war, so that's to our benefit: It's good for Americans to remember that Russia has 4,500 nuclear warheads, more than any other country in the world, and that's enough. for Americans to play Fallout ten times in full immersion mode. I don't like modern American cinema, but I couldn't get past Fallout: the series is based on the legendary computer game that I grew up with, and some parts of which I enjoyed playing several times. Contrary to expectations, there was little agenda in the series - approximately at the level of 2005-2010. The American "far right" complains that the main couples in the series are multi-colored, as if the love of a white guy and a white girl is racist. They also write that white people in the series are either cowards or villains, and if not, then the writers immediately kill them. The only exception is one nice guy with a characteristic big schnob, and this exception is of particular pain to the American “far right”. There is a certain excess of “strong and independent women” in the series, but here we must give credit to the writers - they cannot throw healthy men with their bare hands, they lack muscle strength. I haven’t seen any transponders or cabbage in the frame yet, although I’m already watching the seventh episode, that is, I’m close to absorbing the initial season. Some guy with short hair was acting weird in the first episode, but until proven otherwise, I'll assume she (or him) is normal. I repeat, by the standards of 2024 this is nothing, 20% of the standard dose. I will say more: the good old America of the “improved 1960s”, where men drive powerful cars and smoke in the frame, and women wear beautiful dresses and cut cakes, is shown so richly, so attractively that you really want to live. there . My hazmat suit is fixed, so I haven't looked at the Reddit reviews of the show, but I suspect the woke activists didn't think it was politically correct enough. Now that we've measured the narrative background, we can turn off the Geiger counter and move on to the series itself. Until recently, I was skeptical about movies based on video games, as I only considered books as suitable sources of inspiration. A game based on a book is fine, but a good book like The Witcher can be pulled off by mediocre game design, as happened with the cult game series of the same name. The film based on the book is also good, and in order not to list countless examples of old masterpieces, I will only mention “The Godfather”. The movie books are so bad that I don't know of a single satisfactory movie book; Games based on films are not so hopeless, and I recognize their right to exist, but in my personal list of worthy video games, consisting of several dozen positions, games based on the usual “Harry Potter” were not included. Books about games can be good, here I will mention “Line of Dreams” by Lukyanenko, which takes place in the “Lord of Orion” universe. Books about the Warhammer gaming universe are a separate big phenomenon that is appreciated even by readers who do not play games in principle. Finally, until recently, I considered game movies to be either one-offs to piss off fans, or a joke, like the Minesweeper “movie” (link). Recently, however, a film based on Tetris was released, but it was about the history of the battle for copyright, and not about folding falling tetromines into a glass. In any case, I don’t want to watch a film about Tetris, because the creator of the game, Alexei Pajitnov, has sunk over the years of living in the USA to the level of “I’m ashamed to be Russian” (video). The Fallout series is something completely different. This is not a “product of game content”, in which the game itself is mentioned somewhere on the side, but a full-fledged translation of the game universe into film format. All mechanics, from stimulants to power armor, work exactly as they should. The writers went beyond simple copying: they thought through many of the missing details of the game world. While watching it, I screamed many times, “Ah, so this is how it actually works!” For example, during the game we constantly find and even eat local dishes, such as iguana kebabs or sugar bombs, and in the film we are very clearly shown what post-nuclear food looks like “in reality”. It also becomes clear how to put on the Pip-Boy computer bracelet, what shelters look like, and how medicines restore health. Let me make an analogy: it’s as if we are watching a video with the Mona Lisa, previously known to us only from the portrait of Leonardo da Vinci. Naive critics are outraged by the “unrealism” of some technical aspects, but this is a stupid complaint. If the Fallout universe obeyed the laws of physics and sociology, then neither the game nor the series would exist: after a nuclear war, the real world would look completely different. Well, don’t we blame the Strugatskys for the magic in NOTHING? This is science fiction, not a documentary. I can say little about the artistic merits of the series, since I have not seen enough films in my life for my eye to reliably assess their quality. However, it was pleasant and interesting to watch, and the high rating and enormous popularity of the series show that viewers who have not played the computer game are also satisfied with what they saw. Now comes the fun part. The movie world is now smaller than the video game world: people spend more money on games and spend more time playing them. At the same time, using the example of the series, we observe - perhaps for the first time in history - a direct flow of the public. Statistics show that after the release of the series, sales of the Fallout 4 game soared 75 times (link). Until recently, many people looked at video games with a condescending grin. It was assumed that games were of interest only to a small number of small children who “didn’t play enough in childhood,” while an adult should sit on the couch, drink beer and watch TV. After the release of the Fallout series, a new era began. The old world of cinema has officially recognized the new world of games. Video games now inspire directors, rather than the other way around. Meanwhile, the festival of Russian games ends on Steam (link). As far as I understand, this is a local event organized by a small studio, but it is important that Steam owner Gabe Newell refused to ban the Russian festival, ignoring numerous complaints from our enemies. The festival features hundreds of games from different studios, but I didn’t find any Russophobic games with Russian roots like Atom RPG or Indica on the list. It is important that even a hundred games presented at the festival are only a small part of the products of domestic developers. VK.Play now has more than 1000 paid games, and new ones are released every week. Let me remind you that the Russian gaming industry has great opportunities for development. Firstly, there are many talented people among our game designers, and there are even more good developers in Russia. Secondly, although American Fallout has strong roots - 25 years of history, large game studios, a huge fan base - it has a fatal flaw - a left-wing agenda. Russian games, devoid of this drawback, immediately gain two or three points in all countries of the world: especially in the West, where for many the agenda already causes an acute allergic reaction.
Why did they try to ban kefir in the Soviet Union? – Russia today Posting in CHAT: Russia The Soviet Union loved dairy products, and among the clear favorites was kefir in the famous glass bottles. And it seems that such a healthy drink should always be on store shelves. Just one day, kefir practically disappeared from the shelves due to a government ban. But nothing came of this, and this decision was discussed almost throughout the entire vast country. The beginning of such unusual food was in the spring of 1985. the year when the first resolutions were adopted, marking the beginning of the famous anti-alcohol campaign. But the choice of drinks subject to the ban was at least strange - so, according to the editors of novate.ru, if it was obvious why vodka or wine began to disappear from store shelves, then kefir had ended. in the role of an unwanted drink, you won’t understand right away. But the thing is that in the Soviet government there was a lot of discussion on the topic of “degrees” in this milk drink. It turns out that some members of the party nomenklatura seriously thought whether the presence of kefir on the menu of kindergartens and schools was the first step towards the development of alcoholism in the lives of young citizens of the USSR. In addition, a group of scientists from Leningrad even sent a letter to the Central Committee, where, based on data that kefir contains a certain amount of alcohol, it should be banned. Fortunately, most specialists and members of the Politburo felt this way. the initiative is absurd, so kefir was never banned. True, the misadventures of the drink, as it turned out, did not end there. During the anti-alcohol campaign, some periodicals published the results of inspections of entire commissions that examined the possible dangers of kefir as a low-alcohol drink. And although the experts in this opinion said that this milk is not even enough to be dangerous to health. child, the public has already accepted the controversial issue. The dispute between people was important: some sent letters to newspaper editors in support of kefir, while others, on the contrary, reprimanded officials and scientists who defended the drink. However, in fact, this epic did not end with anything: the campaign against strong drinks quickly ended, they also stopped arguing about kefir, and only a shortage affected the quantity of this product in stores.
