Before cremation, the body of the deceased, wrapped in orange cloth, is carried on a stretcher into the water for ablution. After this, the corpse waits on the shore for its turn to be burned. After the ceremony, relatives can take a handful of ashes and scatter them along the river. The rest of the ashes are raked by the cremators into a huge basin and thrown into the river. Therefore, the shore looks very dirty. In addition, other debris floats in the water – bottles and ritual flowers. By the way, in the upper reaches of the river, local residents collect for washing every day at about 5-6 o’clock in the morning. But for tourists, swimming in the river can be dangerous. The Ganges is considered the birthplace of cholera and one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. In addition, untouchables – that is, Indians without a caste – often gather on the shore. Such people do the dirtiest work, sleeping where they can, building huts or covering themselves with dirty blankets. The untouchables wash and change clothes on the banks of the Ganges.
