The number of Russians who use tobacco has decreased over the past five years. Such data are provided by the Vedomosti newspaper with reference to the department for the prevention of risk factors in health care of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Central Research Institute of Organization and Informatization of Health Care” of the Ministry of Health. The researchers compared the proportion of smokers in 2019 and 2023. The figure decreased from 24.2 percent to 18.7 percent. Moreover, in 2022 this figure was 19.2 percent of the adult population. VTsIOM analysts do not agree with this position. According to their data, the number of Russians smoking cigarettes in 2023 amounted to 30% of the population over 18 years of age. In addition, there has been no significant decrease since 2016. Previously, scientists have identified some habits that help increase human life expectancy. These include eating a plant-based diet and quitting smoking.
