A horse that was found on November 2nd near the road in Andreevka, Khasansky district, belongs to a riding club from Ussuriysk. The owners promptly took the 26-year-old Ash home and are currently taking care of him. The horse has deep wounds on his withers and thigh. It is unknown who attacked the animal; an employee of the Amur Tiger Center only examined the injured horse today. The horses of the Ussuriysk riding club “Vityaz” live in the eponymous bay near Andreevka during the summer – this is why Ash came to the Khasansky district. The club organizes a children’s camp there and is involved in horseback riding, and in the winter, the animals are returned home to the stables in Ussuriysk. However, this year the schedule changed – the club was flooded during the flooding. The owner of the riding club, Ekaterina Burdyug, tells how she had to not only wash everything without mud but also restore part of the stable – it was simply washed away. So not all the horses were taken, and two horses roamed in Andreevka. The 26-year-old Pepel and the 22-year-old Doping are legendary sports horses, once among the best in Primorye and the Far East, and now “retired to relax.” The herd was small, about ten people, and they all had different owners. According to Ekaterina Lvovna, the whole village takes care of the herd. On November 2nd, at 10 o’clock in the morning, her eldest daughter called her and reported that Ash was standing by the road in Andreevka all covered in blood. The owners promptly took the animal home on a horse trailer. Ash had deep cuts on his poll and a scratch on his right thigh. The horse is being treated, taking antibiotics, having saline drips, and treating the wounds, but its condition remains serious – the temperature remains high, and the animal eats almost nothing. “I don’t know if it’ll survive. He’s old enough for us. In the past, he was one of the best horses in Primorye; he competed in both dressage and show jumping,” Ekaterina Burdyug says. Now the owners of the riding club are being helped by the veterinarian Ilya Medvedev, who treated the horses and operated on tigers. Also, the “Maxima Vet” clinic in the well-known Moscow equestrian complex. The representatives of Yassen Club have long cooperated with him and have taken their horses to competitions in the capital. It is still unknown who injured Ash. On November 3rd, the “Amur Tiger” Center reported that there was no evidence that it had been a tiger. But the horse had not been examined yet. And today, November 7th, a representative of the Amur tiger arrived in Ussuriysk. He took videos, measurements, but said he couldn’t immediately determine if it was a tiger or not and would show the materials to the specialists. “Both Ilya Medvedev and I still believe it was a tiger. Though, of course, I am not an expert,” notes Ekaterina Burdyug, emphasizing that compensation is the last thing the club thinks about; they just want to figure out what happened and save the animal. “He is valued as a friend and helper, a family member. It’s not about money. Ash is a deserved retiree, he did a lot of good. And of course, we want him to live longer. Ash was born in our club and has been with us for 26 years,” the owner of “Vityaz” says. The treatment is quite expensive. The antibiotics are not available at local veterinary pharmacies; they order them from Moscow. Supportive therapy is also very expensive. Ekaterina Lvovna says that the club does not deliberately collect money – many people just know Ash, and if someone helps, it would be great. They found themselves in such a situation for the first time. “We have been keeping horses and taking care of them for over 30 years. Including at Vityaz. And this has never happened before. There wasn’t even a hint that a tiger would pay us a visit. Although, you probably know that recently, in the Khasansky district, a tiger killed horses. The tiger comes out to people. I don’t think there is anything in the woods that interests him,” adds the trainer. It is worth noting that the Yassi Club trains children. Its students participate in and win international, all-Russian, and Far Eastern competitions.
