In the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi, an unknown person poured paint on the icon of the Matrona of Moscow with the image of Joseph Stalin. The vandalism was caught on video. After the desecration of the icon, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs opened a criminal case under the article “Petty hooliganism.” As Podem reports, controversy surrounding the icon of the Matrona of Moscow has not subsided in Georgia for several days now. Some believe that he has no place in the Tbilisi Cathedral, because one of the fragments depicts Joseph Stalin. The Patriarchate claims that the icon is dedicated to the Matrona of Moscow, and not to the “leader of the peoples.”
