MOSCOW, March 4. /TASS/. Verkhovna Rada deputy Maxim Buzhansky fears that cases of naming toponyms in Ukraine after Nazi war criminals will be made public in Western countries.

Earlier, the former head of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee Eduard Dolinsky on Facebook (banned in Russia, owned by the Meta corporation, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) reported that the Nikopol City Council decided to change the name of Pavlogradskaya Street, it was named after the Nazi war criminal Pyotr Dyachenko. He served in the SS division “Galicia” and participated in punitive actions against civilians during the Great Patriotic War.

“Someone should still explain to the Nikopol City Council that the vile legalization of the Nazis may attract the attention of our Western partners. It would seem that the scandal in the Canadian parliament, which ended with the resignation of the speaker, should have taught us something. But no,” Buzhansky commented on this decision in his Telegram channel.

Last September, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree naming the reconnaissance battalion of the ground forces of the country’s armed forces after the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN, banned in the Russian Federation) Yevgeny Konovalets. Prior to this, he assigned the name “Edelweiss” to the 10th separate mountain assault brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a similar name to the 1st mountain infantry division of Nazi Germany.

The renaming of streets and the fight against monuments to Soviet and Russian figures in Ukraine began in 2015 after the adoption of the law on the so-called decommunization. Commenting on this, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said that the Ukrainian authorities are rewriting common history in an attempt to erase the Soviet past.
