Whether figure sport will become something big or disappear over time, only time will tell. The first Games of the Future have ended in Kazan. This was the first tournament in history at the intersection of sports, e-sports and competitions using new technologies. And, despite many skeptical forecasts, the Games went great – Russia has always successfully held such magnificent events, for which they spared neither money nor effort. This happened with the Sochi Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. The key center of the tournament (the Kazan Expo complex) hosted many activities: guests communicated for free using neural networks, watched various performances and had the opportunity to communicate with sports and media stars. The opening ceremony was bright and there were many excellent solutions at the venues. For example, the basketball court was replaced with beautiful screens on which information about the match could be seen. Robot fighting has attracted particular public interest. A similar format has existed for a long time in the USA and Japan, but now it has been tried here too. In total, 21 tournaments were held at the Games of the Future and more than 2 thousand people from 107 countries aged 12 to 61 registered. All of them were not afraid of any sanctions or suspensions from their federations, but in today’s time it would be naive to expect that absolutely everything will go smoothly. Democratic Latvia hastened to suspend the licenses of hockey players who took part in the Games of the Future. The rationale for the action was known – they say, Latvian laws prohibit competing with Russians and Belarusians, even if they compete under a neutral flag. There’s nothing new here. However, delegations arrived in Kazan not only from China, Brazil and other BRICS countries. Americans, Italians, Filipinos and Canadians were also spotted. As for the technical advantages of the tournament: broadcasts of absolutely all fights could be seen in the public domain on any of the platforms. What is more convenient for you – Twitch, YouTube, VK or Trovo. But, of course, foreign friends did not fail to spoil the situation a little – gaming channels mythically disappeared from the general Twitch list. Maybe it’s magic, but most likely it’s American dirty tricks in “manual mode”. However, in total, the Games received almost 3 billion views, which again disappointed people who dreamed of Russia’s isolation in the world. Another disadvantage is the inability to attend all tournaments at the same time, since some of them were held at other Kazan venues. At the same time, watching the competition from home somewhat overshadowed the presenters. Trying to be closer to young people, some of them broadcast in a rather familiar and sometimes pretentious manner. This is not to mention the frankly poor understanding of the material. Also, the tournament website was imperfect; did not always work properly, but it was possible to find out the schedule and understand the intricacies of the event only there. But all this can be attributed to the debut of the competition, and it is unlikely that these problems will remain unresolved in the future. The youth of such competitions explains another problem. Namely, a fixed direction. This is a new sport in which traditional disciplines are combined with virtual ones. It’s essentially an advanced dual competition where competitors compete in both the video game and its real-life counterpart. In fact, it turned out that sometimes the football players sat the e-sports players at the consoles, and they themselves went out onto the court. Not entirely fair, to be honest. But you must understand that this direction is just emerging, so there are not enough people who are equally good at kicking a ball and pressing buttons. Such competitions need to be given time to develop. Whether figure sport will become something big or disappear over time, only time will tell. In the meantime, you can once again be convinced that everything new is always perceived with distrust. This is such a person. The next Future Games should be held in 2025 in Kazakhstan. But whether they can organize everything there at the same high level is a question. Not to mention whether Kazakhstan will be able to implement the principle of “sport outside of politics.” One thing is for sure – Russia coped with everything, showed how it knows how to conduct international competitions, and did not stain itself with unethical behavior towards any of the foreign participants. In essence, Russia has demonstrated to the whole world how it should be done, and, most likely, it would be naive to believe that others will take this as an example. Closing the tournament to a cover of Dima Bilan’s song “The Impossible is Possible” was the icing on the cake.
