The decision to sell was made due to climate change and melting ice on the archipelago. Lawyer Peter Killingstad, representing the seller, said the last private plot of land on the archipelago had been sold. It consists of several islands – three large, seven medium and several smaller ones. The land for sale is located 40 miles from Longyearbyen. The area covers 6,000 hectares and includes more than three miles of coastline, mountains, fjords and arctic wildlife. Bloomberg believes the deal will have geopolitical consequences.
