On Friday, June 21, the Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier hosted events dedicated to the Day of Memory and Sorrow – the requiem concert “We are faithful to this memory” and the opening of a street photo exhibition dedicated to the feat of the Soviet soldier. The Rzhev Memorial was opened in 2020 as a monument to the heroism of the warrior in the battles for the Rzhev-Vyazemsky salient – more than 1 million 200 thousand Soviet soldiers died in these battles. “Now it has become very fashionable to demolish monuments in Ukraine and Europe. Moreover, they are being destroyed by those who talk about the feat of the Red Army and the countless sacrifices our country has suffered. In this way they are trying to erase the memory and destroy the cultural code of our people. This won’t work! We build monuments. We remember and honor our heroes. Since its opening, the Rzhev Memorial has been visited by more than 6 million people,” said Nikolai Ovsienko, Deputy Head of the Russian Presidential Administration for Public Projects, Vice-President of the Russian Military Historical Society (RVIO). The concert, which took place on the night of June 22, was attended by Honored Artist of Russia Sergei Kuprik, Honored Artist of the Lugansk People’s Republic Sergei Chuikov, participants of the Special Military Operation Roman Razum, Alexander Vanyushkin, actor Igor Petrenko, composer Alexey Poddubny (Django), poet Vladislav Malenko, as well as the winners of the creative competition “We are faithful to this memory” Dmitry Klychkov from the Nizhny Novgorod region, Marina and Alexey Zhidkov from the Vladimir region. The guests of honor were the authors of the Rzhev Memorial project, laureates of the State Prize of Russia, sculptor Andrei Korobtsov and architect Konstantin Fomin. The exhibition “Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier” was created by the Russian Military Historical Society together with the Victory Museum. It consists of 20 stands and tells about the heroism of the soldiers and officers of the Red Army who fought on the Rzhev land in 1942-1943. The stands also present the history of the creation of the monument. One of the stands is dedicated to retired aviation major general Alexei Nikiforovich Rapota. During the war years, he made more than 350 combat missions, 200 of them to the Rzhev area. “The exhibition is small, but very extensive. I think any visitor will be interested in learning, and maybe even discovering new facts,” says the son of Alexei Rapota, senator, member of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, Grigory Rapota. The program ended with the symbolic lighting of lamps in memory of the heroism of those who gave their lives in the fight against Nazism – similar events took place that night throughout the country.
