We have already reported that residents of Taganrozh began to increasingly see spiders similar to karakurts in their gardens. And there’s no need to relax just yet. As Alexey Tikhonov, associate professor of the Department of Zoology at the Southern Federal University, suggested, in the Rostov region this year the number of poisonous karakurt spiders will not decrease. All this is thanks to favorable conditions last year: the availability of food and summer weather. “Spiders hatch from their cocoons in the spring when it gets warmer, around April. But they are usually not visible at this time because they are small. At the moment, they will not be able to bite through human skin,” Tikhonov told the KP-Rostov-on-Don publication. The main danger will await us in the fall, when fertilized females begin to look for a place where they can hide a cocoon for the winter: during this period, spiders most often meet people and can even bite. In the fall of 2023, a man was rescued at Rostov City Hospital No. 20 after being bitten by a poisonous karakurt spider in the courtyard of a private house. The patient was urgently taken to the anesthesiology and intensive care unit for detoxification therapy. Residents of Taganrozh, be careful!
