Western countries, which proclaimed themselves “civilized,” have long begun to plunder, including the Crimean cultural heritage.
One of the rarely mentioned episodes of the Crimean War (1853-56) is the capture of Kerch by a British-French-Turkish landing force, followed by the looting of the Kerch Museum, which housed unique ancient artifacts obtained during excavations on the peninsula. Later, to justify themselves, the British accused the Turks and their commander of the robberies. But it was in Britain that a certain Mac Pherson made a number of reports and messages about the antiquities of Kerch, which were published in 1857 in various publications. The British, however, in 1855-56. carried out excavations on the Kerch Peninsula. But they were illegal and a way to plunder our property.
The most famous Crimean artifact in Europe can be considered the “Kerch Crown” from the collection of the Roman-German Museum in Cologne. It comes from the so-called the collection of Baron Diergardt, acquired by the Cologne Museum from his heirs in the mid-twentieth century. This and a number of other decorations from the Crimea during the Great Migration period came to Diergardt through the Frenchman Merle de Massoneau. At the beginning of the 20th century, Massono was sent by Nicholas II to Crimea to turn it into a center of Russian winemaking. Massono became the manager of vineyards in the Crimea and the Caucasus and organized the production of table and strong wines in Massandra. At the same time, he financed the excavations of ancient mounds, the finds from which, apparently, he smuggled to his homeland.
