You can talk and write a lot on this topic, but let’s highlight three components:
1. Weak head of state
Nicholas II did nothing to prevent the coup in February 1917 and did not heed the warnings of those loyal to him. He had all the power in the country to nip the unrest in the bud. It doesn’t even matter whether the renunciation actually took place or not; he should not have allowed this in principle.
2. Fragmentation of patriots
Most of those who stopped the revolution of 1905-1907 went to the front. The patriots were pulled apart into different parties; they were unable to consolidate under a common idea – saving the country.
3. Stupidity and betrayal of the elite
Some participants in the conspiracy were deceived, others went to serve foreign powers, and others thought only about their own selfish interests. There is nothing worse than traitors and fools in power. Those who were at the head of the patriots also turned out to be fools.
