On January 14, his daughter Maria announced the poet’s death on her blog: “My dad, Lev Rubinstein, died today.” Previously, the media had already reported about the death of the poet, but his daughter denied this information. On January 8, 76-year-old Rubinstein was hospitalized with serious injuries after he was hit by a car while the poet was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing.
Lev Semenovich Rubinstein is known as a Russian poet, bibliographer and essayist, columnist, public figure, journalist, member of the Union of Russian Writers and winner of the NOS-2012 literary award for the book “Signs of Attention.”
The poet began to study literature in the late 1960s; in the early 1970s he began to develop his own style of minimalism. Influenced by his work with library cards from the mid-1970s, he created his own genre, which arose at the border of the verbal, visual and performative arts – the “card index” genre. Rubinstein is one of the founders and leaders of Moscow conceptualism.
Lev Rubinstein is a participant in many poetry and music festivals, art exhibitions and events. His first publications (in Russian and in translation) appeared in the West in the late 1970s. The first publications in Russia began in the late 1980s.
Rubinstein’s works have been translated into English, German, Finnish, French, Swedish, Polish and other languages. In recent years, the poet has been in opposition to the current government in the Russian Federation.
