New genetic form of Alzheimer’s disease discovered – Russia today Posting in CHAT: Russia Having two identical alleles (gene versions) of APOE4 accounts for 20% of Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases. This was shown by a study whose results were published in the journal Nature Medicine. Alzheimer's disease, characterized by memory loss and loss of brain cells, comes in different forms. However, new research shows that patients with two copies of the APOE4 allele have their own disease, different from the typical one. The scientists analyzed brain tissue and biomarkers from thousands of patients and found that 800 of them had two copies of the APOE4 allele. These patients had high levels of amyloid protein in the cerebrospinal fluid associated with AD, as well as the onset of symptoms of dementia at a similar age. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the presence of two APOE4 alleles may not only be a risk factor, but also cause a specific form of the disease. Previously, Russia created software for monitoring patients with heart disease. Source link Source link
