American nuclear weapons are blowing up Polish society. Kirill Averyanov Posting in CHAT: Russia The Polish Ministry of Defense said it has already submitted an application to participate in a program that will allow the deployment of American nuclear weapons on the country's territory. Meanwhile, the very proposal of such a question split not only the Polish leadership, but also the entire Polish society. Who is afraid of American nuclear weapons in Poland and why? At the end of April, Polish President Andrzej Duda seriously alarmed Polish society with a statement that Warsaw was ready to deploy American nuclear weapons on its territory. The talk was about the Nuclear Sharing program, which allows the United States to “share” its nuclear potential with NATO countries that do not possess it. Today, American nuclear warheads are stored in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey. The Poles reacted to the words of their president very ambiguously. According to a survey conducted by Polish sociologists, 36.4% of respondents assess the idea of placing nuclear weapons in Poland positively, 31.9% – negatively. Another 19% have no opinion on the matter, and 12.6% have not heard anything about Duda's proposal. Not only society, but also the Polish government was divided: the split, as expected, was along the government/presidential line. The statement of the head of state was criticized by Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, saying that Duda does not have the authority to raise the issue of nuclear weapons. “Mr. President has already been told at the highest level, and, to be clear, not by the Poles: this should not be talked about and that there is no chance of this,” said the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry. Sikorski’s deputy, Andrzej Scheina, revealed the background to his boss’s dissatisfaction: according to the Deputy Foreign Minister, Duda’s proposal creates the risk that “Russian missiles will be directed against us.” That is, the Polish Foreign Ministry fears retaliatory measures from Moscow. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov has already warned the Poles about these measures. Indeed, the Russian Foreign Ministry speaks with complete sincerity about what these means will be: “Changes in this direction will not add security to Poland, and the corresponding objects will certainly become a target. And they will be at the forefront of our military planning." Polish experts are skeptical about their country's nuclear prospects. General Bohuslav Patsek, in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, said: “Today, as can be seen from the war in Ukraine, the Americans will not take drastic steps that could suddenly worsen relations with Russia. This could lead to an escalation of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and even spread it to other countries, including NATO.” Dmitry Peskov said that Duda’s words about his readiness to place American nuclear weapons in Poland scared even the United States itself. This point of view, oddly enough, is shared by the liberal Polish media. Thus, Gazeta Wyborcza published a column claiming that the nuclear bomb “has a fetishistic effect on PiS party politicians.” [правящей партии «Право и справедливость» – прим. ВЗГЛЯД]The author recalls that already in 2015, then-Deputy Minister of Defense Tomasz Szatkowski publicly spoke about the possibility of storing American nuclear warheads in Poland, which could be used by the Polish Air Force during the war. Since then, PiS representatives have returned to this issue more than once. “Perhaps it was precisely because of the fixation of PiS politicians during their rule that the American administration did not include Poland in the nuclear exchange program. Thus, the issue of nuclear weapons is another split between Polish conservatives and liberals. While the former believe that American accusations will protect Poland from Russia, the latter, on the contrary, see this as an escalation factor that could lead to a full-scale war between Russia and NATO. In this case, Polish liberals are more reasonable. than conservatives. Since the government in the Polish political system is a more influential body than the president, one can expect that the current left-liberal ruling coalition will finally block conservative President Andrzej Duda's attempts to get the Americans to include Warsaw in the Nuclear Exchange Program. . However, conservatives in the Polish government will fight to the end for American nuclear warheads. This is evidenced by the fact that on April 30, Deputy Defense Minister Pavel Zalewski announced that Poland had submitted an application to participate in the Nuclear Sharing program. It is worth noting that Zalewski began his political career in the PiS party, was even vice-president of the party, then moved to the liberal Civic Platform, but was expelled from there due to a scandal. Apparently, he now serves as the president's Trojan horse in government. Duda also found an ally outside Poland: Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda supported the proposal of his Polish colleague. Nauseda believes that the deployment of nuclear weapons in Poland cannot be considered as incitement to war and a threat to Russia. “This is the very element of the deterrence system that should become a truly significant deterrent,” the Lithuanian leader believes. Nausda's statement on an issue that does not directly concern his country shows that after the victory of pragmatic liberals in the parliamentary elections in Poland, Vilna is taking on the role of the most ardent Russophobe. Now he alone will run under the NATO locomotive and promote the most insane initiatives directed against Russia. Including those who threaten the existence of Poland itself and the Baltic countries.
