More than 100 residents of Vladivostok on Saturday, November 11th participated in the All-Russian scientific and educational event “Open Laboratory” to test how their knowledge corresponds to the scientific worldview. They discussed their answers with scientists from the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, but did not receive any grades – the goal of the event is to popularize science. 30 cities from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, about 130 locations across the country – such is the scale of the educational project for 2023. In Vladivostok, participants this year were welcomed by the Arsenyev Museum, the “Buk” library and the Far Eastern Federal University. Simple and complex questions did not intimidate the townspeople. Filling out the “laboratory diary” with 25 similar questions, the “laboratory director”, a scientist from the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, took the initiative of the participants and helped process each question, while the participants checked themselves. “Our event did not aim to identify the “smartest,” participation and an active interest in scientific knowledge are important here. Of course, for statistics, we collected participants' answers on additional sheets, but the laboratory diary remained with the “laborant,” and now they know the correct answers and can do “laboratories” with their friends, thus spreading scientific knowledge further,” the regional coordinator of the event, scientific communicator of the Institute of Petrified Forests and Palaeoenvironments Far Eastern Branch of the RAS Diana Serdyukova explained. The first “Open Laboratory” in Russia took place in 2017. And two years later, this scientific and educational project received the All-Russian award “For loyalty to science” in the “Success of the year” category.
