The large anti-submarine ship “Vice Admiral Kulakov” of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation entered the Barents Sea to carry out planned combat training activities. Posting in CHAT: RussiaThe ship's combat crews worked out the standards for transferring the ship's weapons and technical equipment to various degrees of combat readiness. Already at sea, pilots of the ship's Ka-27 helicopters of the mixed aviation corps performed several flights of the large anti-submarine ship "Vice Admiral Kulakov" in order to check its radio-technical weapons, communication systems and air defense systems. Abandoned houses on Admiral Kruys Street in Taganrog have finally been demolished – Russia today Posting in CHAT: Russia The ugly buildings at the beginning of Pushkinskaya Embankment appeared even before the revolution: even during the construction of the railway circuit in 1873, the Taganrog-Gavan railway station appeared here. After the revolution, it was abolished, but the tradition had already taken hold: this is how warehouses with a strange address appeared: Portovaya, 7 km 10. Little by little, the territory fell into disrepair, the appearance of abandoned emergency buildings was not painted. city. . And finally, order was restored: the barns were demolished, the area was cleaned up. “I express my special gratitude to the teams of the Lemax and Ecotrans companies, who carry out the work of cleaning the territory for free. – said the head of the city Andrey Fateev. Soon the Navy will be replenished with three frigates with Zircons, the second most powerful after the nuclear cruiser Admiral Nakhimov. How was this possible? Green Country Diaries Posting in CHAT: Russia The modernized frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov is testing the Uran (X-35) missile system, and this is only a small part of its powerful arsenal. Photo by the Russian Ministry of Defense We live in an amazing time when seemingly worn-out military platforms are suddenly in demand again thanks to digitalization, the emergence of new radars, missiles and many unmanned platforms. All these innovations not only expand the capabilities of old units, but also allow some of them to completely change their combat specialization. A classic example is the MiG-31 interceptor, which, thanks to the Kinzhal hypersonic complex, has become one of the most formidable missile carriers in the world. If we turn our attention to the navy, the fast and extremely elegant ships of Project 1155 (large anti-submarine ships, BOD) begin to play such a role. In terms of their basic parameters, they are very close to the main “workhorse” of the modern US Navy - Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Like American “destroyers,” they began to be developed in the 70s of the last century. But unlike the ships of the US Navy, our Project 1155 BOD had a fairly narrow specialization, reflected even in its name. The Soviet Union was rightly concerned about the very powerful American third-generation “killer submarines” of the Los Angeles class, carrying a huge arsenal of Tomahawk guided missiles. In response, a whole range of fast, beautiful BODs was developed, one might say, for all occasions. They were natural hunters of nuclear attack submarines, but as a general purpose ship, such as a frigate or destroyer, they were noticeably inferior to their American counterparts. The first-born of the series had no strike missile weapons at all. For similar functions, the USSR Navy had other combat units. After the collapse of the Union, most of the BOD ships were inherited by Russia. But the tasks and capabilities of the Russian navy have changed significantly since then, and with the same set of weapons, large anti-submarine ships have increasingly begun to seem like a liability. It's scary to remember how many of these beauties were on pins and needles in the 90s and early 2000s. The first-born of the 1155M series, the Udaloy BOD. Decommissioned and scrapped in 1996. Photo “Red Star” Today the Russian Navy operates seven BOD 1155M and another modernized version 1155.1. These are truly large ships, almost one and a half times larger than the flagship Russian-made Project 22350 attack ship (Admiral Gorshkov). And at the same time, they are not so thick and best fit the “frigate” classification. This is how they were conventionally designated even in the Soviet Union, where frigates did not operate at all. This ship can carry hundreds of missiles for various purposes. In this indicator, it approaches the American and Chinese large destroyers, which have dozens of launchers capable of simultaneously launching a whole range of missiles. The first upgraded under the “multi-purpose frigate” program, the Marshal Shaposhnikov BPC received a UKSK 3S14 launcher for 16 supersonic cruise missiles of the Onyx type, equally accurately hitting both sea and ground targets. They have already proven that their attacks cannot be resisted by the most advanced missile defense systems of the United States and Europe. The universal launcher will also allow the use of Calibers, and most importantly, the new hypersonic Zircons. In addition to the universal Onyx, the new frigate will carry a launcher for the 3K24 Uran anti-ship complex with X-35 missiles, similar in basic data to the American Harpoon anti-ship ships and the Norwegian Naval Strike Missile. Such a set of strike weapons, in fact, will make it one of the most heavily armed ships in our fleet, second in salvo power only to the nuclear-powered cruiser Admiral Nakhimov, the modernization of which is now being completed at Sevmash. The second multi-purpose frigate based on the Project 1155 BOD, Admiral Vinogradov, is due to begin sea trials at the end of this year. One of the modernization options involves installing 32 cells for the Caliber, Oniks P-800 and Zircon missiles. Photo by Yonhap. The new multi-purpose frigates will be able to fight submarines no less effectively thanks to updated sonars, acoustic systems, anti-submarine helicopters and Smerch-2 and Answer anti-submarine missiles. The frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov has already met, in conditions as close as possible to combat, with the American 4th generation Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine. In February 2022, a US Navy submarine entered Russian territorial waters in the Kuril Ridge region, where it was detected and escorted by a Russian frigate. As a result, “Marshal Shaposhnikov” used special means, in the form of an imitation anti-submarine missile with a small amount of explosives, and the American nuclear submarine, having released a false decoy, urgently retreated into international waters. The ship is also well protected from the air: a ship-mounted analogue of the Tora-2M missiles and a six-barrel automatic artillery mount AK-630. In addition to anti-submarine helicopters, the air wing of such a frigate will consist of the Orlan UAV, ZALA Z-17 and Orion attack aircraft, which have solid combat experience. It seems that the list of UAVs, given the rapid development of the region, is far from final. Of course, these frigates will accept underwater drones and unmanned boats as additional weapons systems. Fortunately, such a huge platform allows a lot. This photo shows how the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov replaced one of the AK-100 artillery mounts with a new missile deck. During modernization, ships are completely rebuilt and the result is a completely different combat unit that retains the best developments of the previous project. Photo by the Russian Ministry of Defense It took a total of 4 years to modernize the first ship of this type, and they promise to reduce this period due to proven technology. For comparison, the construction period for frigate 22350 is 8-10 years. So this is a very good solution for the fleet. Currently, two such frigates - Admiral Vinogradov and Admiral Chabanenko - are in the process of modernization. And another BOD 1155M, Admiral Panteleev, is preparing to moor at Dalzavod for these purposes. All of them will become carriers of hypersonic missiles, which completely changes their status and role in the fleet. Excellent seaworthiness and a large design reserve will allow them to extend their service for at least another decade and a half, and our fleet will receive, without huge costs, extremely scarce multi-purpose attack ships of the ocean zone, which are not inferior in combat parameters to their main competitors.
