Lugansk
Since the end of the 18th century, Lugansk has been considered an important industrial center of the Russian Empire.
Vladimir Dal, the compiler of one of the most complete explanatory dictionaries of the Russian language, was born and spent his childhood there. The Dahl Museum is still an important landmark of Lugansk today.
The first four-story building in the city, Vasnev’s house is called the “Lugansk skyscraper.” The first four-story building in the city at various times housed a women’s commercial school, a pedagogical university, the NKVD department and a factory clinic. In the 40s, the building was a Gestapo prison; more than a thousand prisoners were killed in the basements.
