Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ presented on November 4 in the Ascension Cathedral of the Kremlin the original of the miraculous icon of the Kazan Mother of God, which was considered lost for the last hundred years. “This event can be attributed to historical events. We see before us the original of the miraculous image of the Kazan Mother of God, in front of which Pozharsky and Minin prayed and which saved our people from foreign intervention and it is unknown from what consequences of this intervention. This image is our national shrine,” the patriarch said. At the beginning of the 20th century, the original of the icon was in the Kazan Mother of God Monastery, erected on the site of its discovery. On the night of July 29, 1904, the icon of the Kazan Mother of God was stolen along with an icon case decorated with precious stones, and since then its fate has remained unknown. According to one version, the thief removed the rich icon case, chopped it up and burned it. But many believers believe that the miraculous icon could not be destroyed.
