This morning, Israeli forces entered the Al-Shifa medical complex in the Gaza Strip. According to regional news channels Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya, the Israeli military entered the hospital site following a previous announcement that it would conduct a “targeted” operation against Hamas at the site. The extent of Israel’s action was not yet clear, Bloomberg said, but the decision was likely to draw international criticism, even after Israel said Hamas was using Al-Shifa Hospital and other medical facilities to house fighters and weapons. Hamas completely denies these accusations. Currently, a spokesman for the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health (controlled by Hamas) told Al Jazeera that the Israeli army is searching the hospital basement. The US has previously said it has intelligence to back up Israeli claims that Hamas and other Iran-backed militant groups are using hospitals, including Al-Shifa, to hide and support their operations. As Bloomberg notes, the Biden administration is increasingly frustrated with Israel’s behavior as its operation has resulted in numerous civilian casualties. However, American support for Israel’s actions in the United States is growing. Tens of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington to show support for the army and the people of Israel.
