According to rumors, he was a music teacher from Chelyabinsk and invented his applicator when he was being treated for pesticide poisoning. It is unknown whether this is true or a myth. In any case, carpets with spikes became very popular in Russia and were sold in pharmacies. And in 1997, Kuznetsov patented an entire suit with needle elements, which is described as a device for increasing human activity and regulating neuropsychic activity. Again, according to rumors, Kuznetsov promised to cure all diseases, including AIDS, and prolong human life to 100 years with the help of his mat. Almost thirty years have passed since the invention of the applicator, and the only study of its benefits has not yet been published. Neither in Russian nor, especially, in foreign scientific journals. But carpets with spikes are still sold in pharmacies, and are also actively advertised by various companies. They offer pillows, belts, and even entire sets of pillows and rugs with needle elements in the shape of lotuses. Sellers promise to relieve back pain, joint pain, headaches, eliminate insomnia, reduce cellulite, increase tone. Even cure our editors’ favorite non-existent disease – vegetative-vascular dystonia. Is there any benefit from the Kuznetsov applicator. Scientific data on mats with spikes is very scarce. We were able to find only two articles devoted to such devices. In one study, 82 patients with chronic back and neck pain pressed plastic spikes on mats with their feet or palms, very similar to the Kuznetsov applicator, for 14 days for 30 minutes. By the end of the experiment, the participants reported less neck pain and an increased subjective pain threshold. Although the mats did not affect lower back discomfort or functionality in everyday life, in another experiment, the researchers tested whether participants could relax while lying on a mat with short plastic nails spaced 5 mm apart. For the first 30 seconds, people suffered from pain, then the discomfort decreased, the heart rate slowed, but at the same time, blood circulation in the back increased, and blood pressure increased. The authors decided that it was possible to relax, since two studies are not enough to draw a conclusion, and the focus remains on other, more studied methods with a similar mechanism of action of alternative medicine with a targeted effect on the skin. For such a massage, electrical stimulation, laser, magnet, hand pressure, heat and ultrasound can be used, but most often thin needles are inserted into the body at the desired points. Unlike reflexology, acupuncture may provide specific benefits. But because scientists don’t know whether it’s the sticking of needles, the targeting of specific areas or even the placebo effect, it’s not worth treating with acupuncture over proven treatments. If acupuncture works by stimulating nerve endings, plastic pricks are definitely not worth it. should be able to withstand it as well as a needle. But there is no evidence for this. Can the Kuznetsov applicator cause harm? Despite the popularity of the applicator in our country, it has been studied no more than applying plantain to a wound. Apart from rumors that Kuznetsov died in his suit with spikes, there is no evidence of harm from such an intervention. It is strictly forbidden to touch the spikes to damaged areas of the skin, as well as to places where there are scars and protruding moles. The latter can be damaged by such exposure. Otherwise, nothing is known about side effects and contraindications. It is possible that if you sleep on such a carpet or wrap yourself in it from head to toe and roll around on the floor, you can harm your health. But so far such cases have not been described. Is it worth using the Kuznetsov applicator? Today, the simplest Kuznetsov applicators cost about 400-900 rubles. But if the manufacturer claims that the carpet is special or that plastic circles are sewn onto the pillow, spray or belt, such a device can cost 2-3 thousand rubles. If you don’t mind the money or like the feeling of prickly surfaces, you can try this product and even get some effect. But it’s much better to go to the doctor, find out the real cause of the pain and take measures to get rid of it. And spend the money on sports equipment or fruit.
