Dmitry Kandinsky / vtomske.ru, The Bank of Russia is warning about a new type of fraud – country residents have begun to write in messengers on behalf of employees of the Central Bank, trying to gain access to the data from a bank account, announced at the Tomsk branch of the Central Bank. According to regulators, the new fraud scheme is being particularly actively used in regions.
According to the Bank of Russia, the scammers create accounts in messengers under the guise of high-ranking officials of the Bank of Russia. The pages look as authentic as possible and contain real information about the managers – last name, first name, patronymic, photo – this information, as noted by the regulator, is taken from the Internet.
The scammers send messages from accounts that supposedly belong to Bank of Russia employees to company executives or representatives of various large companies or government agencies. “In their letters, these fake employees ask for help, such as in detecting fraudsters in a credit organization, and warn about an imminent call from an authorized employee of the relevant ministry. They recommend following the caller’s instructions and not telling anyone about the call. After that, the scammers call the potential victim and under various pretexts try to gain access to banking information or persuade them to voluntarily transfer money to accounts controlled by the scammers,” said the Central Bank.
The scammers may use this scheme against all citizens, including creating fake accounts of the person’s friends on social networks. The Bank of Russia emphasizes that the regulator’s employees do not use public messengers or social networks to perform official duties.
Country residents are asked to be vigilant and not to disclose personal and financial data to anyone, no matter what pretext or method they try to obtain it. “No monetary transactions should be made at the request of third parties. If you have any doubts about the safety of your money in your bank account, you should call your bank yourself at the number listed on its official website or on the back of the bank card,” said the Central Bank.
The Central Bank asks everyone to immediately report such cases of fraud to law enforcement authorities.
