Over the 10 months of 2023, in stores served by the fiscal data operator of the VTB Group, the demand for smoking cessation products increased by 13% compared to the same period last year, while the demand for classic cigarettes decreased slightly. Over the 10 months of this year, Russians spent about 218 million rubles in stores served by the First OFD on the purchase of 202 thousand packages of anti-tobacco products (nicotine chewing gum, patches, special sprays, etc.). The average cost of goods was 1,077 rubles, over two years the price increase was 18%. These drugs are used in the first stage of smoking cessation to relieve psychological dependence, and then the former smoker stops taking them. In the classic cigarettes category, over 10 months there was a decrease of 1-3% compared to the same periods last year (depending on the month). The average price has increased by almost a quarter since 2021 and reached 189 rubles in 2023. In the group of alternative goods, prices also increased by a quarter over 2 years; The average price today is 243 rubles. Since 2021, demand for sticks and smoke systems has increased by 12%. A total of 534 million tobacco products were purchased from January to October, including classic cigarettes, mini-cigars (cigars), smoke sticks and heating systems. According to monthly statistics from the Prodazhi.rf service, the largest number of purchases of tobacco products occur in the summer months, and in cold weather sales decrease slightly. “In 2023, the largest share in the group of tobacco products will continue to be conventional cigarettes – 86% in terms of the number of goods purchased and 82% in value. The second largest share is accounted for by alternative smoking products – 11% in quantitative terms and 14% depending on the amount of money spent. The remaining volumes are accounted for by mini-cigars and other tobacco products. Since 2021, alternative smoking products have managed to grow slightly in quantity and expenses, taking 1% share of classic cigarettes; In the future, we expect a gradual redistribution of activities between these two categories. The growing demand for drugs to stop smoking suggests that today there are many people who want to give up the addiction. Some smokers are motivated to quit smoking because of the constant rise in prices for cigarettes, while others are motivated by health concerns,” comments Maxim Larkin, director of business development at Prodazhi.rf.
