A soldier wounded during a Special Military Operation was given a suspended sentence for being absent from a military unit for a week due to hospitalization. Information about this was published on the website of the Ulan-Ude Military Court.
On October 20, 2022, Vitaly Shelkanov from Buryatia was called up for service. In January 2023, he was wounded during the SVO. From March 20 to April 4, he was treated in the hospital. Shelkanov later informed the command about the need for additional treatment due to the fragment remaining in his body. On April 27, having received permission from the command, he went to the surgeon.
However, after visiting the hospital, Vitaly did not return to his unit, did not get in touch and did not answer calls. In this regard, a search for the soldier was organized, but it did not produce results.
On May 7, Shelkanov appeared at the military commandant’s office for consultation, having learned that they were looking for him. He explained his absence by saying that the exact time of his return to the unit was not indicated to him, and he decided to spend time with his family.
After a medical examination, which found him fit for service with some restrictions, Shelkanov was accused of abandoning his post during the period of mobilization. He was given a suspended sentence of 1.5 years with a probationary period of two years. In addition, a fine of 18,720 rubles was imposed on him.
