Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences This discovery has attracted the interest of researchers, but details about the features and possible characteristics of the species have not yet been disclosed. A new threat to the ecosystem – the Amur chebak In addition to the sausage, the Amur chebak was discovered in the Volga Delta in the spring – a small schooling fish, the length of which does not exceed 11 cm. Scientists from the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences warn that this species may negatively affect the Volga ecosystem. The Amur sea bass actively eats large zooplankton, which contributes to an increase in the number of phytoplankton and may lead to a decrease in the population of local fish species. This invasive species was introduced into Russian waters along with herbivorous fish material. The natural habitat of the chebak is the Far East, as well as water bodies of China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Taiwan. In Russian waters, the chebak is known to be an active eater of caviar, which makes it dangerous for the reproduction of other fish. The chebak is included in the list of 100 most dangerous invasive species in Russia, which includes only 5 species of fish.
