Where is the most mysterious abandoned church? – Russia today

Publication in CHAT: Russia

There is a wonderful church in the Kuzovatovsky district of the Ulyanovsk region. It is like a ship in the desert, standing in the middle of the road far from populated areas. It is covered with grass, but even in this state it is impossible not to notice the magnificence of the architecture. There are many legends associated with the empty Peter and Paul Church, and this wonderful object, even in an abandoned state, still attracts travelers and tourists. . bloggers, as well as treasure hunters Even during the journey to this legendary temple, located in the village of Edelevo, mysterious surprises await the traveler. So, once there, the tourist discovers that there is no church there. But the fact is that in this area there is another village with almost the same name and these two settlements are often confused. And even if the traveler gets to the right place, it may seem to him that he has arrived in the wrong place. The fact is that the terrain here is hilly, and sometimes the church is simply not visible behind the hills. You still have to try to choose the right angle from which the view of this magnificent abandoned building will open. The view from this temple is stunning. In an open field there is a majestic tall church, with no houses or other buildings around it. It is well preserved, although it looks like a typical abandoned building. The authenticity and mystery of the temple is betrayed by the grass that has grown through the stone and covered the upper parts of the church. But where did the village itself and its inhabitants go? To understand this, you need to look into the history of this area. The village was founded in 1653 by the Mordvin Murza Edelev, after whom it was named. In the 1730s, the Russian state allocated Murza a plot of land near the Ierusalimka River (now Rusalimka), where he built houses and, consequently, the wooden Church of Peter and Paul. After the appearance of the temple, the village was renamed Petropavlovskoye. Alas, half a century later the temple burned down, but a few years later a new stone church was erected in its place, built according to the design of the Simbirsk architect Ivanovsky. It is this church of Peter and Paul that has survived to this day. After the revolution, during the fight against religion, this church miraculously escaped destruction, but services in it were banned. Yedelevo, like other villages, became a collective farm, which was not very successful. Gradually, the village began to die out, but this process continued for decades. Young people went to live in the city or in the neighboring village of Novye Maklaushi (the school was later moved there). Old people who remembered the construction of the temple and even went to it as children with their parents, gradually left this world. Now on the territory of the former village you can see only the church and an old half-abandoned cemetery with legends and stories. Mysterious stories are associated with this temple. For example, it is very strange that all the frescoes that once decorated the temple seem to have been removed. It is very symbolic that doves constantly live in the temple – as messengers of God. As for the legends, one of them says that a little girl was once buried under this temple, and now her spirit wanders between these walls or around the church. From a Christian point of view, such a legend sounds like heresy, but impressionable locals believe in it. According to another legend, an incredible number of gold and silver coins are buried in these places. Local residents really did find gold and silver here, including pre-revolutionary coins, as well as all sorts of antiques. According to legend, some villagers even made buttons from ancient coins – they drilled holes and sewed them to their clothes. Therefore, this place attracts treasure hunters who come here and dig the ground around the church in the hope of finding ancient coins or some “treasures”. The excitement is also fueled by the legend that an ancient iconostasis with golden icon cases is hidden somewhere here. Apparently, this is why, as tourists who visited the church noticed, the floors in the building are open: someone was obviously looking for something. The ancient church, alas, is slowly dying, although it is quite possible to restore it. However, there is no talk yet about putting the Church of Peter and Paul in order and resuming services. It is a pity, because the residents have a need: they made an improvised iconostasis in the church.
