The area of distribution of forest pests and diseases in Russia has increased by 2 million hectares in two years and now amounts to 5.3 million hectares. This was announced by the head of Rosleskhoz, Ivan Sovetnikov, at an all-Russian meeting on the results of forestry work. “We are recording a decrease in the volume of sanitary felling, which ultimately leads to an increase in the area of forest pests and diseases,” he said. — The main task for 2024 is to quickly and effectively organize and eliminate pest outbreaks and prevent the spread of pests. The necessary funds have been allocated.” At the same time, last year forest was restored on an area of 1.4 million hectares; for the third year in a row, the area of planted and restored forests exceeds the area of “cut down and dead,” added Sovetnikov. However, simply planting saplings and saplings is not enough, he reminded. – These forests need to be looked after, and even if you have the strength and resources to plant, it is not always possible to provide adequate care for young trees. Over the past year, 155 trees were planted on forest lands as compensation for cutting down trees for the construction of roads, railways and pipelines thousand hectares of forest. This is almost half of the amount that should have been planted – 300 thousand hectares. “The pace of 2023 work on compensatory reforestation at the level of 50-60 thousand hectares should be maintained in 2024,” says the head of Rosleskhoz.
